A lot of people over 30 start looking at Pilates or Yoga when they think about getting fitter. They seem like a good way to ease into exercise, improve flexibility, and maybe get rid of some aches and pains. And they absolutely have their benefits.
But if you want the best return for your training time, if you want to stay strong, mobile and resilient as you age, and actually protect yourself against future health issues, strength training needs to be the foundation. This isn’t about saying Pilates or Yoga are bad. In fact, they can be a great complement to strength training. But if you're only doing those and avoiding strength work, you’re missing out on some of the biggest benefits that training has to offer.

The 6-Week Reality Check: What You Will (And Won’t) Achieve With Your Health & Fitness
No fads, no gimmicks - just real talk. If you're considering our 6-Week Kickstart at Evolutis Gym, it's time for an honest conversation about what you can actually achieve in six weeks. We promise direct, no-nonsense guidance and a supportive environment, but let's be clear: you are responsible for your effort. We're not here to babysit. We are, however, here to bring our knowledge, expertise and know-how to your training, support and guidance. We’ll coach you through a few hours in the gym each week, but you control what happens in the other 168 hours outside the gym. At Evolutis Gym in Coolock, we often hear from people who feel frustrated because they’re training consistently but aren’t seeing the weight loss or measurement changes they were hoping for. If this sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone.
Recently, one of our members, Mark, came to us feeling exactly this way. He was working hard, showing up to sessions, and putting in the effort, but the results just weren’t matching the effort. Here’s the approach we’re taking with him – and it might be just what you need too.... In today’s fast-paced world, we have an abundance of options to indulge ourselves at any given moment. Streaming TV, junk food, takeaways, sweets, beer, alcohol—the list goes on. These comforts are easily accessible and often treated as daily events. But when every day is a celebration, are we truly celebrating anything?
Introduction
Getting older doesn't mean slowing down! At Evolutis gym, we see amazing transformations every day, especially among many of our 40+ members who start or get back into training a bit later in life. We had a great chat with one of our long-time (aged over 60!) members recently, and it got us thinking about the real reasons why staying active as you age is so important. Here’s what we found..... Life often has a way of making us look back, reminisce, and sometimes even regret. Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who has been feeling stuck and struggling with similar thoughts. Here's the advice I shared with him, which I believe can resonate with many of us
Why Do You Serve Others First Before Serving Yourself?
As parents, we often find ourselves in a relentless cycle of putting work, family, and life's demands before our own needs. This pattern of self-neglect can have serious consequences, as one of our new gym members recently reminded me. She shared her story of how, despite being advised by doctors to improve her strength for health reasons, she continued to prioritise everything else over her own well-being. A year later, she still hadn't made any progress. This scenario is all too common. Many of us are conditioned to serve others first before serving ourselves. But why is this the case? And what can we do to change it? As we navigate through our busy lives, it's easy to develop habits that we consider normal and harmless. However, some of these habits can have long-term effects on our health that we often overlook. Let me share a story I recently experienced that got me thinking deeply about this issue.
Lubricate Your Day: Tips to Reduce Friction and Boost Your Fitness Routine If there's one thing I can empathise with, it's that starting something new or maintaining a routine can be challenging. Often, the hardest part is just getting started. In the world of fitness, reducing friction—or lowering the activation energy required to begin—can make a MASSIVE difference in achieving your goals. Think of it as "lubricating your day" to keep everything running smoothly...... We are hard wired to focus on the negative. It's a survival instinct.
So if you are face with a "negative" exam result. Or a fitness or health assessment isn't where it should be. Maybe you've put on weight and fallen backwards slightly? In these situations you could be forgiven for saying "feck it" I'm done.... This however is a mistake. An issue with your mindset. How you choose to look at things..... |
