There are still some people out there who believe that women should stick to the cardio, aerobics or fitness classes and leave the weights to the men.

There are even some celebrity "trainers" who say women shouldn't lift heavier weights than a 5 kilo dumbbell. Thankfully we are now at a point where women are coming round to the idea that lifting weights can bring incredible benefits.

Here are 6 reasons why we strongly believe more women should lift weights.
1) Improved Cardiovascular Health

Lifting weights not only can help to improve blood flow but can also help improve blood pressure.

2) Stronger bones

Something that becomes more of an issue for women as they age is a greater risk of developing osteoporosis. Weight training increases bone density and can help to prevent or delay osteoporosis.

3) Leaner and more athletic shape

It's fair to say that most women want to lose some weight and "tone up". To do this, training should be designed to promote an increase in lean muscle mass which is achieved by strength training.

4) Faster metabolism

By taking part in a structured strength training program, women will put more "meat" on their bones. This will in turn lead to a higher metabolism which means more calories will be burned as energy every day.

5) More confidence

In my time working with women I have found that lifting weights allows women to take on new challenges and do things that would have seemed impossible. It's also worth mentioning that lifting weights has been shown to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression.

6) Maintain independence later in life

Strength as a physical quality is something that can help women to stay mobile & independent later in life.

Anne-Marie

Anne-Marie came to us at the start of the year looking to change her body shape. She had tried regular boot camps and fitness classes but decided to try something different as she wasn't getting the results she wanted.

Spurred on by some of results other girls in our gym had achieved, Anne-Marie decided to take the plunge and get started with our Group Personal Training program. Fast forward a few months and the results he has achieved are exceptional.
