​Lubricate Your Day: Tips to Reduce Friction and Boost Your Fitness Routine


If there's one thing I can empathise with, it's that starting something new or maintaining a routine can be challenging. Often, the hardest part is just getting started. In the world of fitness, reducing friction—or lowering the activation energy required to begin—can make a MASSIVE difference in achieving your goals. Think of it as "lubricating your day" to keep everything running smoothly......
What do I mean by this exactly?

​Here are some practical tips to help you reduce friction and seamlessly integrate fitness into your daily routine:

Prepare the Night Before
  • Fitness Clothes: Lay out your gym clothes the night before or even go to bed in them! This eliminates the morning decision-making process and makes it easier to get moving first thing in the morning.
  • Breakfast: Prepare your breakfast the night before. Whether it’s overnight oats, a smoothie, or simply setting up your coffee maker, having breakfast ready means one less thing to think about in the morning.
Create a Morning Routine
  • Consistency: Establish a morning routine that includes time for exercise. When it becomes a habit, there's less mental effort required to start.
  • Simple Steps: Start with simple, manageable steps. If getting to the gym feels daunting, start with a quick home workout or a daily 5-minute walk. The key is to build momentum.
Optimise Your Environment
  • Fitness Gear: Keep your fitness gear in easy-to-reach places. Store your yoga mat, weights, or resistance bands in a visible, convenient spot.
  • Hydration: Fill a few water bottles and keep them in the fridge, car, or on your desk ready to grab and go.
Plan Your Workouts
  • Schedule: Plan your workout times and days for the week ahead. Put them in the calendar. Knowing what you’ll be doing and when reduces the mental barrier of figuring it out on the spot.
  • Accountability: Find a walking buddy or join a group training programme like ours. Accountability, support, expert coaching, and working out with like-minded people can significantly lower the friction of skipping workouts.
Small Wins
  • Celebrate: Acknowledge and celebrate small victories. Each small win helps keep the flywheel of motivation turning, making it easier to keep going.
  • Progress Tracking: Keep a fitness journal or use an app to track your progress. Seeing your achievements can boost motivation and reduce resistance to continuing.

P.S. Once upon a time, I used to get changed into my gym gear in the toilets on the train home so I could go straight to the gym before I went home and decided the couch was more appealing! How's that for reducing the friction?!
