I was chatting to someone this week about joining our 6 Week Foundations program here in Evolutis Personal Training Gym. I always find it interesting listening to people trying to rationalise starting or continuing with their fitness journey...... (After 15+ years, working with 1000s of kids, athletes, men & women, it's fair to say I've heard ALL excuses!) Anyway - During the chat I was having we came on to price and it was at this point that the word "afford" was used........😰 Now, knowing what I know - I can say that most people don't really want to join a gym - but they want the results.
It's for this reason that people have a tendency to look for reasons to avoid starting or reasons for stopping - even though they KNOW they probably need to do/continue doing something. In this case I worked to help this person find reasons to start. To figure out a way to prioritise their fitness & health. In other words - doing my job as a coach! --- First things first --- What I did in this situation was to talk to that person about how EXPENSIVE their CURRENT unhealthy lifestyle was. For example, the person I was chatting to had been ordering 2-3 take aways (plus a fizzy drink) per week. That amounted to more than €30 per week. Then we spoke about alcohol. .....we "identified" a few beers, glasses of wine or spirits at the weekend with the odd bottle of wine thrown in each week. This added up to another €60-80 per week. Then we added up numerous lattes & cakes in the local coffee shops. That was at least another €20. We could have delved deeper but to be honest this was enough. When we added all of these expenses up we were able to find €130 being spent EVERY WEEK on stuff that was causing this person to feel overweight, sluggish, unhealthy, unhappy and feeling pretty down in themselves. Not only that but risk factors associated with things like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol where really high. Things that can lead to really expensive medical bills or health insurance in the long run. (As you can see - the reality here wasn't an affordability thing at all and more of a priority thing......) On a more personal level was the fact that this person felt unattractive to their other half, had no energy for the kids and didn't feel motivated to do anything at a personal or professional level. They felt completely stuck. And so the best thing about this conversation was this. I was able to show that it was going to cost less than the price of a cup of coffee per day to get started with us. And to afford this, we would could "borrow" from their very expensive unhealthy lifestyle. ---> WITHOUT giving up everything! Thankfully this person was able to see that other than time, they didn't have to sacrifice much to work towards becoming a fitter, healthier & happier version of themselves than they'd EVER been. And with all of this info to hand they've made a (great) decision to get started. Have you been thinking about getting started? Ready to put your own fitness first? To make your health a priority? Already on your fitness journey and thinking about stopping? My advice? The pain of regret is much stronger than the pain of discipline. In other words, you won't regret sticking with it. You might regret looking back and not sticking with it though. So - Don't. Give. Up. ❤️
