Why Do You Serve Others First Before Serving Yourself?

As parents, we often find ourselves in a relentless cycle of putting work, family, and life's demands before our own needs. This pattern of self-neglect can have serious consequences, as one of our new gym members recently reminded me.

She shared her story of how, despite being advised by doctors to improve her strength for health reasons, she continued to prioritise everything else over her own well-being. A year later, she still hadn't made any progress.

​This scenario is all too common. Many of us are conditioned to serve others first before serving ourselves. But why is this the case? And what can we do to change it?

​The Reasons Behind Self-Neglect

  1. Cultural Conditioning: Society often praises self-sacrifice, especially for parents. We’re told that being a good parent or partner means putting others first, always.
  2. Guilt: There's an inherent guilt that comes with taking time for oneself. We worry that by doing so, we’re neglecting our responsibilities.
  3. Time Constraints: Busy schedules leave little room for self-care. When time is limited, personal needs are often the first to be dropped.
  4. Celebration Culture: It has become normalised to drink and eat more often than we should, using every event as a celebration. This leads to an increase in waistlines and health risk factors. We celebrate working long hours and being frazzled, often finding camaraderie in shared unhealthy habits.
  5. Lack of Support: Without a support system, like the one we offer in Evolutis, that encourages self-care, it’s challenging to make it a priority.

Breaking the Cycle

  1. Shift Your Mindset: Understand that taking care of yourself is not selfish. It’s essential. You can't pour from an empty cup. When you are healthy and strong, you are better equipped to care for others.
  2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and set limits on your time. It’s okay to prioritise your needs.
  3. Schedule Self-Care: Treat self-care as an appointment that cannot be missed. Block out time for exercise, relaxation, and activities that you enjoy.
  4. Seek Support: Engage with communities that understand and support your goals. Surround yourself with people who encourage you to prioritise your fitness & health.
