If you’re over 40 and your back, knees or hips seem to “randomly” complain… you’re not alone. What’s interesting is that most of the people I speak to aren’t inactive. They’re walking. They’re doing yoga. They’re playing golf. They’re doing Pilates. They’re cycling. They’re going to classes. They’re trying. And yet… The back still tightens up. The knee still flares. The hip still feels stiff getting out of the car. So what’s going on? Here’s the simple explanation:
Being active is not the same as being structurally strong. Movement is good. But load builds resilience. Walking is fantastic. Yoga is fantastic. Pilates is fantastic. But none of those progressively overload your muscles, tendons and bones in a way that forces them to adapt and become stronger. And tissues that aren’t asked to get stronger… Gradually become less tolerant of stress. That’s not ageing. That’s deconditioning. Your body adapts to what you regularly ask it to do. If you don’t regularly hinge, squat, press, pull, carry and stabilise under controlled resistance… Those systems slowly lose capacity. Not overnight, but gradually. Until one day you bend down to lift something and your back “goes”. Or your knee starts grumbling on stairs. Or your hip feels permanently tight. Here’s something important to understand: Muscle is protective. Stronger muscles reduce stress on joints. Stronger hips protect knees. Stronger hamstrings protect backs. Stronger upper backs protect shoulders and necks. And when muscle strength drops, joints end up doing more work than they were designed for. That’s often when irritation shows up. Now let me be clear. Not every pain issue is solved by lifting weights. Some situations absolutely need proper medical or physio support. But for many adults, persistent aches aren’t a “damage” issue. They’re a capacity issue. You’re simply asking your body to handle forces it hasn’t been trained to handle. And here’s the part most people miss: Resting it isn’t the long term solution. Stretching it isn’t the long term solution. Foam rolling it isn’t the long term solution. Those can help symptoms. But structured, progressive strength training increases your capacity. And increased capacity reduces vulnerability. Most 40+ adults I meet have: - Lost hip strength - Lost hamstring strength - Lost upper back strength - Lost trunk stability - Avoided heavier loading for years Not because they’re lazy. Because life got busy. And when you lose those foundations, small irritations start to feel bigger. You don’t feel fragile because you’re getting older. You feel fragile because your strength base has eroded slightly over time. The good news? Strength responds at any age. Muscle adapts. Tendons adapt. Bone density responds to load. Joint tolerance improves with progressive exposure. And that doesn’t mean max deadlifts or smashing yourself in the gym. It means: - Gradual. - Structured. - Progressive. - Appropriate resistance. Done consistently. This is exactly why our training focuses on building real strength for busy adults. Not random workouts. Not endless variety. Not chasing sweat for the sake of it. But controlled progression. Because the goal isn’t just to feel good after a session. It’s to build a body that complains less in everyday life. If your back, knees or hips keep talking to you… It might not be because you’re broken. It might be because you’re under-loaded. And the fix isn’t avoiding movement. It’s building the strength to handle it. Strength is protective. And protective is powerful.
