I've spoken a lot recently about how I'm glad we've (people in general & the fitness industry) stopped focusing on things like 6 week transformations, challenges and fad or gimmick diets as a way to get "results".... The weight loss rollercoaster as I like to call it! I'll tell you why.... I get that wanting to feel more comfortable with what you see in the mirror is important and is definitely a goal to have.
However.... The bit that is often completely overlooked is the impact a proper strength & fitness program can have on your LONG TERM health prospects. Your ability to stay moving, active, mobile & full of energy later in life. <--- VERY IMPORTANT STUFF To have the energy/enthusiasm so that you can really enjoy life into your later years but also to play an active role in the lives of the people you love and care for. Partner, kids, family, friends etc.... But more specifically - training to keep risk factors low in relation to things like forms of cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness & other lifestyle diseases like type 2 diabetes. Not to mention maintaining bone density and physical strength so you (women in particular) can reduce risk factors in relation to osteoporosis or arthritis. My advice to you is this. Instead of focusing on the surface level stuff - make improving your underlying HEALTH the absolute priority. Make sure you are able to really enjoy (rather than endure) life & have a HEALTHspan as well as a LIFEspan. Do this by participating in a program that is focused on really helping you to improve your physical qualities such as strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness. A program that is focused on recognising the importance of reducing your body fat %, waist measurement and improving your waist to hip ratio so that you improve risk factors in relation to lifestyle diseases. If you make these things your focus (rather than aesthetics) the other surface level stuff will take care of itself and you will end up liking what you see in the mirror anyway! In other words, take care of servicing and upgrading your "engine" first and everything else will take care of itself. I hope that helps..... Talk to you soon, David "what the health?" Knowles P.S.
